As raw and powerul as rock paintings of the ancients, these messages to Elvis are somewhat spooky and maybe even a bit idolatrous.
But to each other, as much as to him, his fans write, scribble and draw on his wall as if they expect Elvis' ghost in the darkest part of night to ride up under a full moon.
He would dismount his 1958 Harley, park, stand and read with one hand touching the stone.
And he would see his fans' personal messages document a yearning for themselves as much as for him.
The medium for these messages is the front stone and masonry wall approximately 300 feet long and 10 feet tall at Elvis Presley's Graceland Mansion.
It sits at the very edge of the sidewalk on Elvis Presley Boulevard, giving hundreds of thousands of visitors
annually an indelible opportunity to send a message to Elvis and each other.
There is a pilgrim quality to these visitors. They memorialize their presence as if on a pilgimage.
The location is, for all practical purposes, an international secular mecca.
And so they have so much so that periodically the wall has to be sandblasted to make space for current communicants,
leaving only slight traces of previous, but undying, messages.
Look closely and you can read them again, like discovering old love notes in the bottom of a drawer
or useless files in folders on your computer you meant to trash. Those memories just keep coming back.
